The director of the World Health Organization stated on Monday that the coronavirus is ten times more deadly than the 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic, for which the imposed measure of "Social isolation" could not be replaced by any other better one.
Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus spoke about how various countries have already suffered several weeks of social and economic restrictions, some preparing to impose them, and others considering whether they can be lifted. "In all cases, these decisions must be based first and foremost on protecting human health and guided by what we know about the virus and how it behaves," he said.
Dr. Tedros recalled that the strategy should be adjusted as new evidence is obtained, but that early case finding, testing, isolation, and contact tracing are essential to stop transmission. "Although COVID-19 accelerates very fast, it decelerates much slower. In other words, the way down is much slower than the way up. That means that restrictive measures must be lifted slowly and with control. It can't be all at once ”, he assured.
Behaviors that will have to change
In this regard, the Organization's director of emergencies, Dr. Mike Ryan, assured that confinement could not be replaced by “nothing”. “We have to replace it with educated, committed and empowered communities. We will have to change our behaviors in the near future. So far we have seen good people in most cases, but we should have those adaptive behaviors in terms of hygiene and physical distance for a long time, "said Ryan.
