The Ecatepec government and local merchant organizations agreed to suspend activities one day a week during the months of July and August, in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19, which in this municipality has already killed 450 people. , while 3,953 have been confirmed as positive.
In fact, Ecatepec heads the list of the 125 Mexican municipalities with the most deceased people and the highest number of infections in the entire territory, Nezahualcóyotl is in second place, with 3,452 cases and 236 deaths, and the city of Toluca in third, with two thousand 391 cases and 328 deceased people.
Regarding the closure of street markets and markets in Ecatepec, the mayor, Fernando Vilchis Contreras, reported that the measure includes all merchants and was agreed after a process of dialogue between the municipal government and the different merchant organizations in Ecatepec.
He explained that the Ehécatl Plan was launched, which includes various actions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and to help the neediest families in the municipality, which among other supports will receive Basic Family Packages and Hygiene Kits.
He added that the directorates of the Government, Civil Protection, Comptroller, and Citizen Security, as well as the Coordination of Markets, Tianguis and Vía Pública, agreed with leaders of organizations of vendors to suspend their activities one day a week, during next July and August.
The measure includes the 308 street markets and street vendors that are installed in Ecatepec; the 138 municipal markets will also close their doors one day a week.
The municipal government appreciated the willingness of merchant leaders, who have made proposals to help prevent this contingency from spreading further.
