They give preventive detention against Emilio Lozoya in Spain

February 13th, 2019

A judge of the Spanish National Court took the videoconference statement to Emilio Lozoya Austin, arrested yesterday in Malaga by Spanish authorities at the request of the Attorney General's Office. After the videoconference with the former director of Pemex, the Spanish judge Israel Moreno determined that Lozoya carried out his extradition process in pretrial detention, arguing that he had "intended to escape justice", with a penalty of 15 years in prison. This, of course, subject to the extradition process to be carried out by the FGR. Moreno also explained that the former Pemex owner showed a driver's license with an identity different from his when he was arrested, which was issued by authorities in Mexico City, under the false name of Jonathan Ortiz Fuentes.

The former official said he only had two days in Spain when he was arrested. However, police would have located it before in Malaga. In addition, the newspaper El País said that Lozoya could have laundered money for some Russian mafia organization and that the former official had been investigated since the beginning of the year. "The final investigation to arrest him started in early 2020 when the first signs that he could hide on the Costa del Sol were collected."

As mentioned yesterday, and with pretrial detention, the Mexican authorities have 45 days to present all the corresponding documentation against Lozoya, and from that moment, extradition to Mexican territory can be extended up to 6 months. Lozoya is told to receive $ 10.5 million in bribes from the Brazilian company Odebrecht.
