In the State of Mexico there are about 379 thousand speakers of indigenous languages according to the census of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). Although according to that same instrument when it refers to self-registration -recognition of the population belonging to an ethnic group- the figure increases and reaches nearly 3 million inhabitants, specialists said when talking about the "Original Peoples" in the Entre Voces program of the Electoral Institute of the State of Mexico (IEEM).
Aníbal Mejía Guadarrama, Rector of the Intercultural University of the State of Mexico (UIEM) and Daniel Gutiérrez Martínez, Researcher of the Colegio Mexiquense, stressed that there are 45 municipalities in the state that have inhabitants of native towns, established by the local Legislature with help of the State Council for the Integral Development of Indigenous Peoples (CEDIPIEM), where migrant peoples are also recognized.
During his participation in the program that was broadcast on TV Mexiquense, Aníbal Mejía Guadarrama explained that the terminology has meant that there is no discriminating bias, since an original people has to do with those who were settled in the country and in our case in the State of Mexico before the Spanish conquest.
