Widening the wage gap between the poor and the wealthy in Mexico

June 10th, 2019

Even if the income of 40 percent of the poorest population in Mexico increased more than the national average, as suggested in the UN document, it would take more than 120 years to match the wage gap between "rich" "And" poor "in our country.

Leticia Merino Pérez of the Institute of Social Research (IIS), indicated the above, when considering the goals of the tenth Sustainable Development objective of the UN 2030 Agenda, in terms of "reducing inequalities".

"In fact, the rate at which the income of the most vulnerable sectors has grown in the last 10 years, has been higher than the national average. Nevertheless, this increase does not allow us to meet their basic needs. Explained the coordinator of the University Seminar on Society, Environment and Institutions (SUSMAI).

When intervening in the 2030 Meeting, an Approach from Mexico and the UNAM, the co-author of the Environmental Agenda 2018, "Diagnosis and Proposals", mentioned that Mexico suffers from extreme inequality. Even though it is the 14th economy in the world, it has 44 percent of its inhabitants in poverty and 7.5 percent in extreme poverty.

The 10 percent of the richest receives 36 percent of the country's income, in contrast to the 50 percent of the population that is divided 20 percent of the income. The poorest 10 percent receive only 1.8 of the income. This concentration of income brings us back to a colonial past that continues 300 years later, "he said.

Merino Pérez assured that it is not only an economic issue, since companies have more and more power. He exemplified with the tax regime, which is very favorable for the wealthiest. It is estimated that up to 2016 more than 80 percent of government tax revenues were paid by natural persons.

"Children (52 percent) and adolescents (49 percent) are particularly poorer than the rest of the population. This is very sensitive, it is very serious for society. Vulnerability in Mexico is structural. We need structural changes that are not gradual, nor only programs of transfers to particular sectors; policies of inclusion are required, of deep transformation, not only economic, but also social and political, "he said.

All this, he continued, translates into environmental vulnerability, since there is less access to key resources such as water, because powerful groups impose their vision of environmentalism that in most cases is partial.

In the country, according to figures from Leticia Merino, there are almost 12 million rich people, who concentrate the economic resources of more than 84 million people with low or very low incomes. In 2002, he stressed, the wealth of the four wealthiest Mexicans represented two percent of gross domestic product (GDP). However in 2018 it was equivalent to 10 percent of GDP.

"Addressing inequality in Mexico requires reversing the privileges (political, economic and social) of a richer percent of the population," he concluded.
