Diving masks are adapted to attend cases of COVID-19

Cuautitlán, México, May 29, 2020

Personnel from the Mexican Red Cross Local Delegation in Cuautitlán, State of Mexico, successfully adapted a diving mask to be used as a biosafety device by those who care for patients with COVID-19, the which guarantees a safe, more comfortable and efficient atmosphere for the battle against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

With the support of researchers from the engineering school of the Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), Mexico City campus, members of the Mexican Red Cross made modifications to the mask that is normally used for diving and transformed it into what they named it "Full Face", which protects practically 100 percent of the spread of the coronavirus through the nose, mouth, and eyes, which is the most common form of transmission.

Dr. César Chávez and Diego Arcos del Ángel, directors of the Local Council of the Mexican Red Cross in Cuautitlán México, specified that the 3D printing of a rectangular coupling (connector) was achieved in order to place an antibacterial filter such as snorkel respirator, which allows air to enter and exit without pathogens.

The Full Face mask provides greater respiratory, visual and facial protection, avoiding the use of googles and face masks, which facilitates its use for long hours of care for COVID-19 patients, without causing discomfort or lacerations to the paramedics' faces, laborers, nurses and doctors who work in the areas of attention to the coronavirus pandemic.

Arcos del Ángel specified that the mask replaces the use of N95 copper mouthpieces, scarce and high-priced at this time, and being originally used underwater guarantees its hermeticism, thus preventing the leakage of viruses and bacteria to any part of the face.

He reported that the coupling designed and printed in the third dimension allows the placement of the HEPA filter (by its name in English: High-Efficiency Particulate Air), which prevents the ingress of contamination and provides a higher level of protection against diseases transmitted by air.

The Full Face mask has a higher cost than high-efficiency masks, such as the N-95. However, as it is reusable through sanitization and basic cleaning, it saves constant purchases of disposable devices, which are currently out of stock in Mexico and need to be imported from other nations.

They stressed that this mask, together with biosafety suits and gloves, is part of the work team to care for patients with serious respiratory diseases, so work is already underway on the larger-scale production of this new biosecurity device, to distribute in the 29 local Mexican Red Cross delegations that operate in the State of Mexico.
