Mayor and Ecatepec officials donate salaries for those affected by COVID-19

May 5th, 2020

Middle and upper managers of the Ecatepec city council, headed by the mayor Fernando Vilchis Contreras, will donate a fortnight of wages in kind to support the most unprotected families in the municipality during Phase 3 of the COVID-19 health emergency.

The mayor announced that in his case it will be a month of salary that he dedicates to providing support to low-income families. The amount collected is equivalent to five million 50 thousand pesos with which to buy products from the basic basket that will be distributed to the population in their homes by elements of Civil Protection and Public Security.

In total there will be 245 officials, including department heads, deputy directors, and area directors, as well as the municipal president, trustees, and councilors, who will voluntarily contribute their biweekly salary, which represents more than five million pesos. In addition, Vilchis Contreras reported that he receives a net monthly salary of 59,500 pesos, which will reduce 50% from next June and until his term ends, which will make him one of the mayors of the State of Mexico that receives the lowest income monthly, with 29 thousand 750 pesos.

Participating public servants will acquire food with the equivalent of their biweekly salary, which will be distributed by the Ecatepec DIF, with the support of municipal police and Civil Protection elements, to the most vulnerable families in the municipality, which will be carried out directly in their homes, without intermediaries or neighborhood leaders or social organizations.

The municipality will also donate the second half of May to support families in vulnerable communities in Ecatepec, many of which face a difficult situation due to Phase 3 of the pandemic.

Ecatepec is the municipality with the most population in the State of Mexico, part of which is in poverty, for which reason the health emergency severely affects thousands of Ecatepec families who live daily and suddenly were left without sufficient resources. In recent days the municipal government called on citizens and businessmen to donate food, medical equipment, and hygiene and cleaning products to support families in vulnerable communities in Ecatepec, for which reason it installed Collection Centers in the civic centers of San Cristóbal, Santa María. Xalostoc, Melchor Múzquiz, and Santa María Chiconautla. To date, the municipality registers 535 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 33 deaths.
