Deputies mourn harassment against investigative journalism

Toluca, Mex., On March 11, 2020.

Deputy Faustino de la Cruz and legislator Azucena Cisneros lamented the harassment conditions faced by communicators who carry out investigative journalism in the entity, after the unjustified dismissal of a reporter from El Heraldo from Mexico, allegedly due to pressure from the Government of the State of Mexico (GEM), due to inquiries about onerous expenses in the bureaucratic apparatus.

The Morenistas stressed that journalists play a fundamental role in the right to know, the right of access to public information, the right to the truth and the right to hold public officials accountable to society.

“In Mexico, the main obstacle to the exercise of freedom of expression is the acts of violence and intimidation suffered by journalists and other people who work in the media, so much so that on many occasions self-censorship becomes the alternative so that they safeguard not only his personal integrity but also his life, ”said Deputy Faustino de la Cruz.

Journalist María Teresa Montaño Delgado, with more than 20 years of experience in the national and state media, conducts investigative journalism through The Observer platform, one of the first independent projects in the State of Mexico, specialized in fact-checking, transparency and investigative journalism.

“In the last two years, through this platform, various issues of alleged corruption and opacity have been documented, such as the“ secret pensions ”that were delivered to former governors at the expense of the public purse; diversion of resources in the Seguro Popular program administered by ISEM between 2017 and 2018; the annual expenses for the maintenance of the Government House that inhabits the state executive in turn and the annual expense in the use of aircraft for the transfer of officials, ”explained legislator Azucena Cisneros.

The journalist pointed out that after her dismissal, there is pressure, interference, and harassment from the Mexican government, whose interests have been affected by the journalistic investigation work. It has also been subjected to other types of pressure, harassment, prosecution, and espionage.
