Broad Democratic Front: At last!

Last Sunday the PRD endorsed the creation of a Broad Front (Frente Amplio in Spanish) to, in practical terms, avoid repeating the results of the last elections in the State of México and set up a monolithic vote that leads to expel the PRI from the Republic’s presidency.

The political party –and this is important to all chairos (a despective way to call someone with communist tendencies, but who is not really committed), please pay attention, because you only repeat what it’s convenient in order you can say “Morena against the world”- announced they don’t discard the possibility of an alliance with any opposition party, even PAN or Morena, for the presidential elections next 2018. It means that, despite the rejection of Juan Zepeda that leaded Andrés Manuel López Obrador to strongly refused an alliance with the PRD for 2018, under the well-known label of “PRI’s paleros” (palero could be understood as “servant”), PRD wouldn’t have any problem in joining with Morena –not in a submissive way-, in order to avoid a new six years priista period. I repeat, they’re not turning down Morena.

My opinion about this is clear: At last! They hesitated a lot.
Though it seems to me tremendously ironic that two parties, such as PAN and PRD, which are unable to agree on each other, want to ally for 2018 elections, I consider it is a necessary alliance, a healthy polar front.

As many analysts predicted, last elections were the laboratory, a first trial, for the coming ones. The PAN had no presence because of its appalling candidate, PRD had a miraculous recovery, but it wasn’t enough to materialize a real competition, Morena realized too late that its hard and radical vote wasn’t going to be enough and, for any reason, everybody tough the PRI would play fair. Now, it has a lot of sense the fact they’re looking for possible alliances since the first moment, without protagonism or threats, because now it’s clear that it takes more than statistics and threats. Further, there’s something much more important: the fact that we need to become aware that if we expel the PRI from Los Pinos, the situation in Mexico will automatically improve.

My reaction in previous elections wasn’t as furious as in the last ones because just one reason: these elections showed the worst of us. Unfortunately, it is very significant that the two worst possible political scenarios reflected, precisely, the same two that were on the top on the surveys: PRI and Morena. This year’s election were nothing but a popularity contest, and very few people made the extra effort to inform themselves in order to not voting for the candidate with more presence in the media and promotional, but for the best one.

Of course, this PRD’s proposal needs more than just “good intentions”. Reach an agreement with the opposition parties won’t be easy at all, especially because every party must stop looking for its protagonism and surrender their leaders and political actors so they can raise a coalition candidate. But, as an old proverb says, “a thousand miles travel must start with a simple step”. Besides, through this Broad Front we’ll realize who raises his hand moved by a thirst for power and who doesn’t.

Another good point I can see about this exercise is that, if there are fewer parties, the winner candidate is more likely to win because of a real majority. It is the base of the quorum: the half plus one.

We hope this idea doesn’t stay just on that: an idea, and the political actors have the ability of reaching ideological arrangements that allow the country progress. Our duty as a society consist in propose initiatives, be proactive and participative. The nation project MUST be a citizen one, pulled apart from the personal interests of party leader and, of course, we mustn’t loss of sight the nominated candidates, analyzing their trajectories, ideas and initiatives.

The Broad Front won’t expulse the PRI on its own, we must do it all together.
