Government and women of Ecatepec together against gender violence

September 6th, 2019

At least eight lawyers hired by the government of Ecatepec will provide support to relatives of victims of feminicide and gender violence in the municipality, who will provide legal advice and assist the Public Ministry during the corresponding procedures.

Women of Ecatepec, collective representatives and the municipal government agreed to go together in the fight against gender violence and femicide in the most populous municipality in the country and facing serious social lags.

The first dialogue meeting to build the basis for Ecatepec to generate its protocol towards the prevention of femicide was the response that Mayor Fernando Vilchis Contreras presented to women victims of gender-based violence, as well as to relatives who have suffered the loss of any victim of femicide and the activists who marched from the iron bridge to the municipal palace last August 30.

Vilchis Contreras accompanied by area managers of the town hall, spoke with the women, whom he proposed to carry out work tables to respond to the petition sheet presented to him, to move forward in solving this serious social problem.

The mayor publicly recognized the legitimate struggle of women against violence and famine, in the first meeting he held with several activists and relatives of victims, held in Hall 9 Villages of the Municipal Palace.

He proposed to hold a working table on September 20 to look for meeting points and address several issues of the solicitation document presented to him by the activists, whom he asked to walk together to find alternatives to solve the problem of gender violence. He also pledged that initially, the municipal government will hire eight lawyers to provide support to victims of gender-based violence and femicide in Ecatepec.

The munícipe offered an open and inclusive government because he alone will not be able to face the serious problems that afflict the community, including violence against women.

Grisel Barrientos González, director of the Municipal Institute for Women and Gender Equality (Immig), proposed that the municipal government grant legal support with a group of lawyers, who collaborate with the Public Ministry and the Prosecutor's Office.

Family members of femicide victims participated in the meeting with the municipal government, including Rita Ramírez, sister of Angélica and aunt of Karla, and Silvia Vargas Velasco, mother of María Fernanda Catalina Rico, who related the problem they have faced so that the authorities listen to them and do justice for their loved ones killed.

Nallely Arenas Morales, of the network of civil associations Women Ecatepenses for Human Rights, delivered the petition document to Vilchis Contreras, whose requests are that the municipal government grant a public apology for the violation of human rights to the women of Ecatepec, the training of public servants on gender issues, campaigns on gender equity in schools and the creation of a Memorial in the Jardines de Morelos neighborhood.

Vilchis Contreras said that the municipal government received the solicitation document and will provide an answer to it, for which they are the work tables that will be carried out in search of solutions.

The first meeting was held with the presence of some media outlets, in which Vilchis Contreras received the petition document on which he immediately expressed his rubric, as a sign of commitment to the cause of those who share his desire for the municipality to reign peace.
