Ecatepec de Morelos, Mex. Inhabitants of El Dique neighborhood, located in Ecatepec, asked the Federal Government INTERVENTION to stop the works of the Siervo de la Nación highway, as it would devastate more than 250 trees that REPRESENT the few lungs of the town. They also asked to investigate the irregularities of the work, which doubled its cost from 4 thousand 200 to 8 thousand million pesos.

Those affected recalled that in 2013, the former governor and now senator of the PRI, Eruviel Ávila, announced the start of the 14-kilometer road work, from Avenida Gran Canal to Venta de Carpio.

The former president had reported that the highway would cost 4 thousand 200 million pesos, but according to a video of the construction company Mota Engil, the cost will be 8 billion pesos.

In the El Dique neighborhood, the company plans to remove 250 trees, have already evicted 15 families, two more houses have refused to withdraw despite threats and intimidation and because they claim there is no expropriation decree. "The company wants to devastate the entire area. We will not allow it because those are trees that we planted for the ecology of the area, and we have an urban garden installed BY the University of Chapingo with tomato, corn, cilantro, chile, chard, alfalfa, pumpkin, and zarzamora”, said José Juan Barrera Andrade, a native of the colony for 62 years.

Rosa Irene Barrera Vázquez explained that since the announcement of the works, they have requested information on the road project, on the technical level of damages, expropriation decree and environmental impact statement which have been denied, and THEY have been fighting for five years to prevent their homes to being destroyed.

She said that throughout these years they have suffered intimidation by state and municipal officials, as well as those in charge of the work. Just this week, Jesús Luis Ignacio Zendejas Osorio, general director of the Ecatepec Region Government, came with a group of employees to do measurements for the alleged manifestation of environmental impact.

"Everything was manipulated to be sponsored by the New Airport that was canceled, now they want to carry it out, but it stopped being a sustainable and viable project, and in the end the concession will end up paying the citizens because they are going to have for more than 45 years”, accused AN affected neighbor.

José Manuel Marmolejo Delgado, Friends of Albarradón Association A.C, said that the construction company Mota Engil also devastated historic heritage from an 1880 old prison and Casona, built in the Porfirio Diaz government. They already requested the intervention of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), so that it sanctions for violation of the Federal Law of Historical Monuments.

The neighbors asked the Federal Government to intervene to prevent the destruction of the wooded area, which is one of the few lungs of Ecatepec, and to investigate alleged anomalies in the project, as the company asked to expand the concession to operate it from 27 to 46 years
