Ecuador says #AQUIESTOY against human trafficking

April 15th, 2019

Alert Ecuatorian society about human trafficking and promote the number “1800 CRIME” to report possible cases are the main objectives of the #AQUIESTOY campaign, launched this Thursday at an event of high level at the headquarters of the Integrated Security Service ECU 911 in Itchimbía.

The formal adoption of the #AQUIESTOY (Here I Am) campaign by the Ecuadorian Government summoned approximately 200 representatives of the central and local governments of the Diplomatic Corps and of the UN agencies, civil society and the private sector. It was led by the Minister of Economic and Social Inclusion, Berenice Cordero; the Undersecretary of Public Safety, Diego Tipán; the Resident Coordinator of the UN in Ecuador, Arnaud Peral; the UNODC Representative of Peru and Ecuador, Kristian Hölge; and Verónica Supliguicha, representative of the Anti-Trafficking Network of Quito.

Between January 2017 and December 2018, the Ecuadorian authorities reported that 287 victims of human trafficking, mainly for the purpose of sexual exploitation and forced labour, have been rescued.

The capital Quito occupies the first place where this crime is concentrated. Ecuador has a robust legislative framework and specialized entities to investigate and prosecute trafficking in persons. However, greater participation and cooperation of society is necessary for these structures to function fully.

#AQUIESTOY contributes a fresh and positive concept to raise public awareness of existing forms of exploitation and unexpected scenarios in which a human trafficking situation could occur.

"Today Ecuador says #AQUIESTOY against human trafficking.

#AQUIESTOY encourages denouncing and becomes an instrument of great social and political impact which thanks to the power of social networks has the capacity to reach millions of people, "said Kristian Hölge, Representative of UNODC for Ecuador and Peru.

According to the UNODC Global human trafficking, corresponding to 2018, 72% of all detected victims of human trafficking are women and girls.

Ecuador is not the exception and this is not the only affected group: people with disabilities, returned migrants, indigenous communities, young people with Internet access are vulnerable to unscrupulous traffickers.

In addition, Ecuador has become a transit and destination country for thousands of Venezuelan migrants who are at great risk of suffering different types of exploitation.

The material of the campaign was presented by Felipe De La Torre, Public Information Officer of UNODC in Mexico, who stressed that human trafficking is a harsh reality for a large number of people who demand to be heard, rescued and request another opportunity. He also commented that #AQUIESTOY intends to include all possible victims and referred to the communication tools for people with visual disabilities that have been developed. The material of the campaign includes 11 postcards, also available in braille, and 6 spots. Each product is specially designed for the social context and Ecuadorian geographic diversity.

Finally, the delegate from TAME EP (Ecuador's airline) informed to the audience that more than 200,000 people, including passengers, customers and their crews, have been sensitized after the airline formally adopted #AQUIESTOY in September 2018. TAME EP became the first airline in South America to join this awareness initiative.

#AQUIESTOY has reached 88 million 129 651 loves through social networks, traditional media, training and workshops. With Ecuador’s joining, UNODC hopes to add more citizens to this renewed version of the Corazón Azul campaign, which was launched for the first time in Mexico in 2010.
