Since its creation in 1996, the Electoral Institute of the State of Mexico has worked to guarantee the political-electoral rights of citizens and the periodic and peaceful holding of elections, ensuring that gender parity is complied with, in addition to assisting in the dissemination of the political-democratic culture, aspects that were highlighted during the special program in Behind your vote.

In the special that was broadcast on YouTube with the official IEEM user, in addition to mentioning the contributions that the electoral body has made to strengthen democracy in the entity for 24 years, the capsules of the President Counselor, Pedro Zamudio Godínez, the Electoral Counselor, María Guadalupe González Jordan, as well as the Electoral Counselors, Miguel Ángel García Hernández and Saúl Mandujano Rubio, who gave their point of view on the role of women in politics and that of the Institute as a body that guarantees their rights electoral politicians.

The electoral authorities highlighted that the regulatory framework has gone through several stages to include women in positions of the popular election until reaching the most recent reform approved in 2019 that refers to substantive parity in all decision-making spaces at the level national, state and municipal.

They also agreed that it is important to recognize their value in different areas of life, promote their participation in politics, eradicate political violence, as well as develop affirmative actions that allow them to continue empowering them.

Another aspect to be dealt with in the special issue was to show the relevance of organizing 16 electoral processes, of which 12 have been ordinary elections, 4 of these have been to renew the government of the State of Mexico, and 8 were ordinary elections, to renew the local Legislative Power and members of City Councils. In addition, the four extraordinary elections held to elect those who made up the Ayapango City Councils in 1997 were recalled; in 2003 in Chalco, Atenco, and Tepotzotlán; 2006 in Ocoyoacac and 2016 in the municipality of Chiautla.

It was also mentioned that it is a fundamental task of the Institute to contribute to the strengthening of the political party regime and to contribute to the promotion and dissemination of political and democratic culture, therefore, it develops activities to promote citizen participation and civic education through conferences, courses, forums and book fairs, periodic publications on electoral matters, and, offer postgraduate studies.

In addition to having different commissions and committees for the development of activities, the IEEM also has the Special Commission for Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination, chaired by Electoral Counselor Sandra López Bringas and composed of Electoral Counselors Daniella Durán Ceja and María Guadalupe González Jordan, in addition to representatives of political parties, to design, execute, and promote institutional mechanisms that guarantee the exercise of the political-electoral rights of women and men on equal terms and free from discrimination.

Thus, the actions carried out constantly by the IEEM contribute to the preparation of the next Electoral Process in 2021, in which the Local Deputations and the City Councils in the State of Mexico will be renewed.
