Carlos Romero Deschamps resigned today to his position as leader of the Union of Petroleum Workers of the Mexican Republic (STPRM).
After a closed meeting of the National Executive Committee and the 36 sectional secretaries of the body that lasted just over two hours, the resignation of the union leader was accepted.
Romero Deschamps relieved Joaquín Hernández Galicia, known as “La Quina”, who at the beginning of the Salinas de Gortari government, had already had five-six years leading the STPRM.
Similar to what happened with Eduardo Medina Mora, Romero's accounts had been frozen last Monday. On Friday 11, the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV) received a request for information from the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), of the Ministry of Finance, (official letter 110 / E / 445/2019) on Romero's bank accounts and even his wife and children. Although, unlike the magistrate mentioned, at the time of writing this note the accounts remain blocked.
In addition to being the leader of the oil union for 26 years, Romero Deschamps has been a deputy and senator for the PRI, with whom he grew politically and economically, since 1961.
