Greenpeace rejects closed-door dialogue with the State of Mexico

February 27th, 2019

After the peaceful demonstration carried out by Greenpeace on February 18, in which blankets were displayed inside and outside the Government Palace with the message “Transportation in the State of Mexico kills ”, The Alfredo del Mazo government committed a public and transparent meeting with the participation of civil society and the media to delineate a safe and sustainable mobility plan for the state.

The agreed date for the meeting was February 27, however, in communications with part of the Mobility Secretary Raymundo Martínez Carbajal's team, the government of the State of Mexico expressly requested that only Greenpeace participate in a meeting to closed-door, leaving out allied local organizations and the media to what this environmental organization flatly refused, since the demand around improving public transport in the entity has been made together form a coalition.

“Greenpeace denounces the lack of transparency of the Mexican government and repeated attempts to reduce and fragment citizen participation, which is alarming and demonstrates the absence of democratic spaces in which it is possible to build genuine proposals from the citizens that are oriented to generate government commitments to solve the mobility crisis facing the entity, ”said Carlos Samayoa, Mobility Coordinator at Greenpeace Mexico.

“Greenpeace will not participate in the unilateral dialogue. We reiterate our interest in collaborating in what could be the beginning of a transformation in the mobility of the State of Mexico - urgent and necessary - as long as the government guarantees the conditions of transparency and inclusion of all the voices that have been involved in that process for years and in the face of society, ”he explained.

Meanwhile, due to the high rates of insecurity, accidents and pollution caused by the disease and loss of life of thousands of people in the absence of safe, efficient and sustainable transport, transportation in the State of Mexico will continue to kill until Alfredo Del Mazo and his Mobility Secretary Raymundo Martínez Carbajal do not show your face and implement a mobility plan to avoid it.

It should be noted that just this Wednesday, the AirVisual organization published in Switzerland a study on air quality in several countries, showing the presence of PM2.5 particulate material in numerous cities, placing 3 municipalities of the State of Mexico within the 15 cities in Latin America with the highest concentration of this pollutant: Toluca in place 5, Nezahualcóyotl in the ninth and Ecatepec de Morelos in place 14; This demonstrates the urgent need to change the mobility model in the State of Mexico, where emissions of polluting gases are unacceptable, due to the excessive amount of vehicles and the lack of low-emission public transport, modern, articulated, safe and structured. on routes that serve people.
