The info:

Last 23rd of January, the State of Mexico’s governor, Alfredo Del Mazo, said that according to the data given by the Encuesta Nacional de Seguridad Urbana (National Survey of Urban Security) the perception of insecurity has dropped from a 93% to an 86% in Ecatepec.

This statement was released in a meeting with the group of security in the Palace of Government where the improvements in Ecatepec were evaluated.

Analysis:

The survey, source quoted by Del Mazo to guarantee the decreasing in the perception of the lack of security, was made by the INEGI (National Institute of Statistics) in the first fortnight of December of 2017 and it shows the variations on the perception of the same topic regarding September of the same year.

According to the results of this survey, Ecatepec had a really high percentage in perception of lack of security in September (93.5%), just behind the city of Villahermosa in Tabasco with 98.4%; Coatzacoalcos, in Veracruz with 97%; the north area of Mexico city with 94.8%; and Reynosa in Tamaulipas with 93.6%.

Three months later, this perception about Ecatepec dropped to 86.6%, exactly 6.9% less compared to the last results given by the same survey.

This fits with Del Mazo’s statement about the decrease in the perception of insecurity. However and considering that it was a meeting to announce the results of the governor’s politics in security matter in the entity, there is a data that the governor skipped and is worth to rescue, which is that in spite of everything, Ecatepec is still one of the municipalities with worse perception of governmental performance according to the same source.

The population’s view over the government’s effectiveness of their city to solve the main issues in Ecatepec reached barely the 11.2%, just a bit better over Cancun with 9.3%, Tuxtla Gutierrez with 9.8% and Villahermosa with 10.5% and actually, the municipality with the worst perception regarding governmental performance in the State of Mexico.

Conclusions:

Indeed, the perception about the lack of security in Ecatepec dropped down according to the numbers showed by Del Mazo. However, it is pointed out that he mentioned the most positive aspect contained in the INEGI’s ENSU, skipping during his speech the appalling reputation the government has in front of the citizens in the municipality.

In spite of admitting that the case of Ecatepec is scarce (since it was one of the few cities that actually diminished its perception about lack of security while in the rest of the municipalities it grew), in the three months-results mentioned by Del Mazo, the problem of the citizens’ governmental perception is a point that should have been made.

Grading:

In a strict sense, Del Mazo said the truth with his info, but he omitted other important and relevant aspects for the context of his speech, therefore, his statement is ALMOST TRUE.
