Water outages and pandemic turn poor neighborhoods into "Ghettos" in Edomex

May 21th, 2020

Mayors from the east of CDMX and Edomex demanded to suspend bank fees for cash withdrawals at ATMs, due to their high cost and the conglomerations that are causing the displacement of users to banks; while others considered that the return to the "new normal" should be agreed between the governments of the region and not in a "shabby way", as some state authorities have proposed (Alfredo del Mazo).

In an unpublished online press conference offered by the ediles of that region of the metropolitan area of the Valley of Mexico, where the biggest “red focus” of the coronavirus pandemic is located in the entire country, the mayors exposed the crisis in which their populations are submerged, in which apart from the problem of COVID19, they face poverty, high levels of marginalization and incongruities of high authorities, as in the case of Ecatepec, where the government of Alfredo del Mazo again reduced the flow of water turning many Ecatepec´s neighborhoods into true "ghettos", denounced its mayor.

During the teleconference, the mayor of Iztapalapa, Clara Brugada made a brutal diagnosis from the outset, highlighting that this pandemic has brought to light the serious social inequalities facing Mexico, since "it is not the same to face the pandemic in the main city halls of the CDMX center than in those located on the periphery ”, as they face not only the largest infections, confirmed and people who have died as a result of the pandemic, but also the highest levels of poverty.

She indicated that the poverty that is concentrated towards the east of the Valley of Mexico, has caused the pandemic to reproduce more quickly since these are people who live daily since most of them are merchants and are prevented from confining themselves and avoiding contagion.

The mayors of Iztapalapa, Texcoco and some other councilors agreed that the installation of at least 350 street markets in all this strip of the eastern part of the Valley of Mexico, was what caused a massive expansion of the new SARS-CoV virus- 2, until reaching the levels that exist today, making the area the largest epicenter of infections with 26.6% of all confirmed cases in the country. Currently most of these street markets have already been contained and are suspended, although people are desperate to return to work, she said.

In her first diagnosis and accompanied remotely by the mayors of Ixtacalco and the Mexicans of Nezahualcóyotl, Ecatepec, La Paz, Ixtapaluca, Texcoco and Chimalhuacán, among others, Brugada referred to the issue of ATMs, where high-risk conglomerations are being registered reason why he asked to lower the amount of these commissions since he said that although "the poorest of the poor" are making an effort to stay at home because the banks cannot make an effort too and temporarily suspend their commissions in that region.

The councilors at this point agreed to request the banking authorities this Thursday to suspend the commissions.

On another matter, they considered that the "de-escalation" of sanitary measures for the "return to the new normal" must be agreed by the municipal governments of the eastern region.

The mayor of Ecatepec, Fernando Vilchis, said that it cannot be a measure in the “shabby” way, as the state executive has proposed and I reiterate that on the issue of water, insensitivity has persisted on the part of the Alfredo del Mazo government, since the cuts in the supply of the vital liquid in the midst of the pandemic, together with confinement and poverty, maintain entire neighborhoods as authentic “ghettos”.

The councilors also warned of the lack of distribution of support for the poorest who are forced to confinement, as well as other measures by the government of the State of Mexico, in terms of mobility (for sanitization of mass transportation means, as potential reproducers of the CONVID19).
