Emilio Lozoya captured in Spain

February 12th, 2019

Pemex's former director, Emilio Lozoya Austin was arrested in Malaga, Spain, Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero confirmed today.

Lozoya, accused of money laundering, bribery, and embezzlement, was arrested by the Spanish police, which attributed the capture "to the excellent relationship between the Mexican Public Prosecutor's Office and the National Police", and disseminated an image of the driver's license of the former official.

Gertz Manero indicated that the arrest was carried out after an investigation carried out for 7 months throughout Europe, and especially with the German authorities, at first, and later with those of Spain.

“It has been a task of always being in fundamental contact with the German authorities, which was where the investigation began, then several clues were obtained in several countries. Interpol was working with more or less capacity, but when he arrived in Spain they were really much more difficult and the arrest of this individual was achieved and several steps are being taken at this time, ”he said. For his part, Javier Coello Trejo, Lozoya's lawyer, argued that he will provide all the evidence in the extradition process. " shocked me deeply, but that's how it is. We have all the evidence and now we will release the corresponding evidence that at the time the Mexican justice did not allow us to vent," he said in an interview.
