Trump fails to cancel the DACA that protects "dreamers"

The United States Supreme Court put the brakes on US President Donald Trump in his attempt to cancel the program that benefits 700,000 young immigrants, the so-called "dreamers", thus known by a previous law known as DREAM, which it was introduced in 2001 and it would grant a path to US citizenship and give them protection from deportation.

The insistence on expelling these thousands of students from the country comes from 2017. Instead, a few days ago, the US court highlighted the merits of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Surely the president will continue trying to fulfill this campaign promise now that he is on the irresponsible tour, on the subject of COVID-19, since regardless of the risk of contagion Trump continues to call rallies in his aspiration to continue in the White House another period.

Recall that DACA was the initiative of former US President Barack Obama to protect from deportation people who had come to the United States as children. The status is renewable and is granted for two years. The program does not provide a way to obtain citizenship.

With this action, the beneficiaries have permission to stay in the country and obtain a job, which is also important because at the same time they obtain benefits such as health insurance, driver's licenses, scholarships, among other things.

Most of these young people are Mexican, but they are also from Central and South America, Asia, and the Caribbean. They came to the United States as children and today they are no more than 30 years old. Their parents looked for better life opportunities outside their countries, surely due to the lack of jobs and the situation is very similar or worse than it was three decades ago.

Although migration has decreased in recent years, many continue to pursue that dream that perhaps decades ago did reach millions of people; However, the situation of this sector in the neighboring country of the North is becoming more difficult every day, the reasons ranging from the harsh security measures after the attacks of September 11, 2001, to the sanctions for those who are "illegal".

The COVID-19 pandemic made it even more difficult for those seeking asylum to cross. Since March 20 when the United States closed its borders due to the pandemic, thousands have been stranded in Mexico.

The causes that cause migration to the United States are diverse. The past six-year periods that caused economic crises, the abandonment of the countryside, the failed industrial reconversion, the high dependence on the maquiladora industry, are some of the economic factors that explain the illegal entry into a country, where the cost can be death.

INEGI figures indicate that, in 2002, 92 out of 100 male compatriots migrated in search of job opportunities. In the case of women, they are half of the cases. Another cause is the family union, trying to meet with those who have already crossed, in the case of men it represents 9.8 percent of migrants. In the case of women, it is 39 percent.

There was a collective illusion that jobs in the United States are inexhaustible or pay is much better. However, opportunities began to be scarce for a long time, even from the government that preceded Donald Trump, nowadays migrants are persecuted with everything and they obtained their legal stay, it is enough that someone speaks Spanish to be a victim of racism. There are daily stories about it.

Trump maintains his threat to build a wall. When he first became president in 2017, the lowest number of arrests in the last 5 years occurred (almost 300,000 in the February-December period).

But for the following year, it doubled, (about 600,000) and in the first 5 months of 2019, there were almost 500,000 arrests. In those years the number of minors who tried to cross with their parents increased, but also those who traveled without the company of relatives. In January 2019, 24,198 families were detained, by March that number doubled to 53,208 and in May it reached 84,542. In this way, families could request asylum; if the authorities detained a minor, they were obliged to release him at the border in less than 20 days. But later the cases of violation of human rights against infants became known.

Mexicans trying to cross are fewer and fewer, the numbers increased in cases of Central Americans, especially Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. The main reasons in these countries are the increase in population, the lack of jobs, and low wages in addition to the poor working conditions.

The victory for the dreamers may not be permanent, President Trump aspires to win the elections on November 6, if so, he will continue to raise the wall in all possible ways, although without success until now. The solution is an Immigration Reform that regularizes the estimated 13 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States.
