HIGHLIGHTS

The Mexican State must protect and protect the right to defend human rights

June 16th, 2020

We urge the head of the federal government to publicly recognize the fundamental role of human rights defenders and journalists in society and condemn the human rights violations committed against them, in addition to condemning the attempts of different groups to discredit their work.

Often, human rights defenders and journalists face countless threats and harassment that remain incomplete impunity, as well as criminalization for their work.

Mexico City, June 16, 2020.- In recent weeks, the number of acts of defamation, criminalization, and harassment against human rights defenders and journalists in different entities of the Mexican Republic has increased alarmingly.

Unfortunately, most cases are not investigated, if investigations are opened, they are inevitable to failure. The inability of the Mexican authorities to investigate and punish those responsible for human rights investigations transmits the dangerous message that crimes committed against human rights defenders and journalists have no doubt in our country.

Civil Society organizations such as CEPAD, the Oaxaca Consortium, and the Marabunta Brigade have been subject to serious defamation, criminalization, and harassment. Criminalization has often been preceded by statements by high-level officials, with absolute impunity.

Defamatory statements by officials undermine the ability of any organization to continue its tireless work for the defender, promote and protect human rights in an enabling and safe environment.

Therefore, from the Mexican Commission for the Defense and Promotion of Human Rights (CMDPDH), we urgently call on the federal government and governments for public recognition of the fundamental role played by human rights defenders and journalists in Mexican society, strongly condemn the multiple violations of human rights committed against them and the intentions to discredit them.

Likewise, we urge local prosecutors and the Attorney General of the Republic to carry out investigations into the threats and violence that our colleagues from CEPAD, the Oaxaca Consortium, and the Marabunta Brigade have suffered promptly and impartially with the aim of bringing to justice the perpetrators and accomplices guilty of these serious crimes.
