AT RISK OF LOSING COFFEE, SUGAR, BANANA, AND PAPAYA IN THE SOUTH, FOR MISSING MIGRANT WORK

February 11th, 2019

The coffee, sugarcane, banana and papaya crops in the states of Chiapas, Veracruz, and Oaxaca, are at serious risk of being lost due to confusion of the type of migrants, by Mexican authorities of the Interior, National Institute of Migration and Foreign Relations.

In this case “these are mostly Guatemalan peasants, who for more than 30 years have crossed the Mexican border every year to support farmers to collect crops in those states, with no intention of becoming residents of Mexico or emigrating to the United States, ”said Chiapas coffee grower Alfredo Moisés.

During an interview, he said that immigration authorities maintain a rigid migration process and with the requirement of documents that farmers are not able to comply because they are temporary workers. “At the end of the harvests, they return to their communities without another claim,” said Alfredo Moisés.

He added that, to the food producers of the aforementioned entities, they are interested in having the federal government take action on this matter, and proceed to differentiate the migratory regulations. "Hondurans and citizens of other Central American countries, many are not peasants and their only interest is to continue on their way to the United States."

“A solution for us, he said, would have to be immediately, because the harvesting of the crops does not wait and neither the stay of the Guatemalan peasants on the borderline could wait indefinitely. They need food for several days and money to travel, ”said Moses.

He said that the contingent of Guatemalan workers, mainly, do not come to Mexico to move workers. Mexican workers, with good reason, have found opportunities in the tourist areas of Oaxaca, Cancun and various regions of Yucatan and Campeche. "It's the reason that farmers need workers, but temporary, not definitive." Finished

He added that leaders of the Coffee Product System and other product-systems have raised the Ministry of Agriculture and mainly the Government, but unfortunately, these matters are not of immediate interest. "They cited us until February 18, while we are almost halfway through the harvest season."
