After Mexico City, Toluca is the second capital in the country with the highest amount of museums, which put it in a privileged place in the national cultural offer, since, in addition of this great variety of enclosures, Toluca offers more attractions for the national and foreign tourists due to its historical wealth, social plurality (which enriches the popular traditions), and gastronomic variety.

Located just an hour away from the Mexican capital and placed at more than 3,000 meters above the sea level, the city offers to the visitors the option to visit any of its 24 museums, most of them set in historical buildings or in structures with avant-garde design.

Among the most beautiful and old museums of the state capital, it is the Bellas Artes museum, located in an old convent from the 18th century, baroque style and features of plateresque, which later adopted the neoclassical style.

The museum harbors paintings from the 16th to 19th century and it has seven exhibition rooms, as well as corridors and a yard.
In the city center, other places can be visited such as the Museo de la Estampa, which shows woodcuts, scans, silk-screen prints, offset and neographies from all over the world; the Nishizawa Museum, dedicated to the teaching and painting works of Luis Nishizawa Flores, where how to paint is taught; or the Museo de la Acuarela, placed in the environs of the Alameda Central (a big park near the city center) where it is possible to appreciate, inside of a beautiful 19th century building, the works of important masters in this genre such as Coghlan, Barrios, Nogueira and Mendiola.

Also very close to the Alameda, it is possible to find the Museum of Numismatics in the old neighborhood of La Merced, which is in a beautiful building from 19th century and it was inaugurated in 1987 to preserve and spread our historical past through the knowledge of our monetary system.

The José María Velasco museum, located next to the Palace of Government of the State of Mexico, is also one of the most beauteous in Toluca, since it is located in an old house of the 17th century but with a restored façade two centuries later.
Also this museum enclosure has a historical value since the priest Miguel Hidalgo spent the night during one of his journeys in the struggle for the independence of Mexico in 1810. It is dedicated to the paintings of one of the biggest artists in Mexico, José María Velasco.

In Toluca there is the Centro Cultural Mexiquense, placed 20 minutes away from the city center, where there is another complex of museums: the Modern Art Museum, the Museum of Anthropology, the Museum of Popular Cultures, besides having the Historical Archive of the State of Mexico and the Central Library.

This Cultural Center, the first of its type in the State of Mexico, is also a recreation place, since it is located in the old Ranch of San José la Pila and it has large yards and a spectacular view to the volcano called Nevado de Toluca, one of the greatest natural attractions of the area.

In the center of Toluca, there are other cultural offers, recently it was opened to the public the Alfeñique Museum, which is dedicated to preserve the tradition that surrounds the production and selling of traditional candies (called “Alfeñique”) of the region. There are, also, other exposition rooms such as the Natural History Museum, placed in the building of the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México (UAEMex, the university of the state), a beautiful construction from the 19th century, or the one built on the hill named “El Calvario”, from where it is possible to have an incredible panoramic view of the city.

This cultural offer is complemented with a whole infrastructure of street markets, squares and parks, with a huge variety of places to taste some of the most traditional meals, candies and drinks of the area.

Visit Toluca and explore its recesses, you won’t regret.
